Dog Slaughter Falls
April 10, 2006 12:00 pmWell it’s April in Kentucky and spring is in the air. Over the weekend we made a venture out to Dog Slaughter Falls. The falls was really flowing this week after the big rain we had on Friday. It was a nice hike out to the falls as usual, a little muddy in places but it was well worth it. If you have never been out to Dog Slaughter I would highly recommend a trip out there. To get to the falls you would head toward Cumberland Falls and look for road 195 (if coming from Corbin, KY the road is on the right before you get to Cumberland Falls, if coming from Hwy. 27 the road is past Cumberland Falls and will be on your left) which takes you out to the parking area at the falls. After turning on 195 proceed approximately 2 miles to a wide spot in the road, park here. The trail is about 1 mile in length out the falls, its relatively easy hiking a little steep in places but not too bad. The last leg of the hike down to the falls from the top is pretty steep and defiantly more strenuous than the rest of the hike. The falls dump into a large pool of water which leads downstream to the Cumberland River and on to Lake Cumberland. Rumor has it that this is a great place to take a dip in the summer however I would make sure that I didn’t swallow the water. The GPS coordinated for this location is N 36° 51.510 W 084° 18.719 (WGS84). Also for the GeoCachers there is a cache hidden at the falls I hope you have better luck than I. I looked for the cache but could not find it, but there is always next time. Click here for pictures of Dog Slaughter Falls. Here is a trail and topo map for Dog Slaughter Falls.

Yahoo Arch Trail #602
April 6, 2006 2:27 amFrom the trailhead follow the old road along the ridgetop. After 1/2 mile the trail begins to descend. Stairs with railings marks mark your approach to Yahoo Arch. Turn left and follow along the base of the cliff. At one mile you will have reached Yahoo Arch. The arch has a height of 17 feet and a base of 70 feet. Also you will notice a smaller arch on your left. You can either follow the path you came to return or you can continue the traill on to Yahoo Falls. Total length of this dirt trail is 1.5 miles and I would rate it as moderate. Parking is located on the KY 700. This hike has connections to Markers Arch trail, Negro Creek trail and Yahoo Falls trail. Here is the map of this area.
