Stranded Cavers Rescued
May 29, 2006 11:00 amRescuers workers saved six people trapped inside a Southern Kentucky Cave. The search and rescue operation happened in Pulaski County.
People in the area refer to it as the Green House cave in Pulaski County.
Around 11 Saturday morning, seven people went inside the cave to explore. The group decided to take a shortcut, but the part of the cave they entered was flooded. One man tried to wade through the flood waters and ended up stranded on an island. He suffered from acute Hypothermia.
The seven were friends from Michigan who were camping out and caving in Kentucky.
People take for granted that caving can be a hazardous activity. Some tips to remember when going underground are:
- Never go alone, always let someone know where you are going.
- Never attempt to navigate flooded passages water can rise very quickly in a cave. Storms or strong rain miles upstream can fill a cave rapidly.
- Dress appropriate. Hypothermia is a concern since caves are quite cool even in the summer time.
- Bring drinks or something to keep you hydrated in case you are trapped. Alcohol is not recommended.
- Bring dry cloths if you can. It may seem like a hassle to have to bring the extra weight but you never know when you may get stranded.
- A emergency blanket is recommended, they are very light weight and don’t take up a lot of room but they could save your life in the right situation.
- I don’t recommend building a fire in a cave unless you are sure there is adequate ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
By following a few common sense tips caving can be a great adventure. Thousands of people do this sport safely each year however it seems that here in Kentucky we have a few instances each year where people get injured or stranded. It’s much better to be prepared and make it out alive as opposed to the alternative.

Project Money Pit
May 25, 2006 2:32 amThis post may seem off topic however rest assured that it is directly related to this site. I recently purchased a Jeep so that I could get out and explore some of the places that aren’t real accessible unless you are up to walking some very rough terrain. Some of the real nice places here in southern Kentucky are very hard to get to and requires an ATV of some sort or the desire to hike for miles, being a person that would rather drive as close as possible especially since the weather is getting warmer than walk I decided to purchase a Jeep. I would have to say it is keeping me busy for sure. I have had it out a couple of times and must say this is the way to go. The first trip we made with the Jeep was a trip out three mile road in an attempt to get to the Rockcastle River out on Hwy 192 between Somerset and London. This road is called three mile road because its three miles off of 192 back to the river. Now three miles doesn’t seem far, however this isn’t your typical three mile drive to the local grocery store. This road winds back on top of ridge with drop-offs on each side and requires you to navigate some rough terrain. The road takes you across creeks, down rock banks and through the woods. The day we went there were other vehicles parked at the top of the road I assume people had trailed their trucks out there instead of driving them to the site. We drove a mile and a half or so back down the trail attempting to get to where we wanted to go maneuvering around the mud bogs that we could and going through the ones that we had to. We eventually came to really bad looking place that was about 100 feet long or so and winded around the bend. I was afraid to attempt this since I didn’t have a winch or another vehicle to pull me out and I really didn’t feel like walking all that way to get back out and even if I had I have no idea how I would have gotten the Jeep unstuck. Since this time I have been working on the Jeep and getting it in better shape for future endeavors. I refer to this Jeep as “Project Money Pit”. Seems there is always something to do or something else you want to try. I guess I am like a kid and this takes me back to my Tonka Toy days, growing old is a requirement however growing up is purely optional. I have plans to go back out to the three mile road after a few upgrades to the Jeep or if I can catch someone else going back there. Trust me I have saw some pictures of this site and it’s definitely on my list of places to explore. Hopefully my next trip I will make it to the river and will have some pictures to post.
